Earth and the Sun

photo3.jpg

This shows the size of the planets in our solar system compared to the Sun. Our Sun is different from most stars in the Milky Way galaxy. It is a single star rather than a binary star, among the most massive 10% of nearby stars, has about 50% more heavy elements than other stars of its age and type, and only 33% of their variation in brightness. All these factors are necessary to enable our lives on Earth. Approximately 99.9% of all the matter in the solar system is inside the Sun.
